About the Event
We all know that good sexuality education saves lives! But could it do more? Could it support the whole and healthy development of sexuality in ways that aid liberation and justice, particularly for black and brown youth?
There are a number of vetted and effective comprehensive sexuality education curriculums. These curriculums have taken major strides to expand conversations about the wholeness of sexuality, intentionally discuss the diversity of gender, sharpen definitions of consent, and implement trauma-informed approaches. Yet, over all, traditional curriculums have ignored one major topic--- the impact of racism and white supremacy on sexual identity, health outcomes, intimate relationships, and so on.
During this panel discussion we will explore how “coloring” the topic of sex education by addressing the impact and influence of historical oppression, and explicitly centering the lives of black and brown people could be integral to creating more relevant and effective sex education.
